Where to STAY in Chicago

Chicago is a big city made up of many distinct neighborhoods (77 to be exact), something exciting in each one. With plenty of great neighborhoods to stay in, where you want to stay will depend on your needs.

Since we don’t have all day, let’s visit my top four neighborhoods and where to stay, from Budget to Baller. I personally have been gravitating towards Airbnb lately verses hotels. Airbnb offers a more personal feel with more amenities and less fees than a hotel. Similar sites are VRBO and HomeAway. In some cases, a hotel provides a better option, which is why I research all accommodations.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Prices were valid at time of posting, but are subject to change at any time
  • Prices are based on average nightly price and will depend on your travel dates
  • I based my search on a 4 person stay in order to accommodate families
  • I’ll also include the city’s premiere party pads, for those that like to travel in herds (like me!)

JOAT Tip: These prices are their average or standard rates, but rates change and sales happen- it never hurts to check out your favorite baller spot, maybe you’ll get lucky! {Praying for ya!}

The Loop

For those that love the hustle and bustle of the city life or want to be in the center of the action, the Loop is for you. Downtown Chicago, aka the Loop, features soaring skyscrapers and historic public art that catch your eye at every turn. Work up an appetite shopping on State Street, then choose from an array of award-winning restaurants that will satisfy any hunger. From the Loop you will be in walking distance to museums, theaters, parks and Lake Michigan. Famous sites in this district include Willis Tower, the Art Institute of Chicago, and Cloud Gate. Night owls beware, there is no nightlife here. You’ll have to Uber to River North for your uber fun nights 😉

Average lodging price in the Loop for 4 adults: about $200/Night

Near North Side

This eccentric former industrial district has been transformed into high-end art galleries, exciting nightlife, and some of the finest restaurants the city has to offer. Located north and east of the river, the bustling Near North Side combines urban energy with residential living. Downtown is close enough to walk to or public transportation can get you to the Loop in minutes. Tourists tend to flock here due to the plethora of amenities along with exquisite views, which (of course) drives up the prices.

The Near North Side offers many diverse neighborhoods. Whether you want to enjoy a late night meal at a top restaurant or dance the night away at a raging club, the lively River North section awakens at night. Streeterville is an elite neighborhood offering upscale shopping on the Magnificent Mile, luxurious high-rises and Navy Pier. Historical Old Town is modern, yet charming, and is home to the infamous Second City improv comedy club and the award-winning restaurant Alinea (deemed “Best Restaurant in America” three times!). In the affluent Gold Coast you’ll find Oak Street Beach where you can soak up the sun and still enjoy impressive city views.

Average lodging price in the Near North Side: $260/Night

Lincoln Park

Sprawling with 1,200 acres of green space, also known as Lake Park, Lincoln Park sits along the shore of Lake Michigan in the North Side of Chicago. Lincoln Park, decorated with tree-lined streets and brick rowhomes, is a vibrant district with trendy boutiques and many high-end stores as well as an eclectic food scene. Residents tend to be young professionals, law students and families. Things you’ll want to see include the Lincoln Park Zoo (naturally), 2nd City Theater, and McCormick Place Convention Center. Because its further from the Loop, Lincoln Park tends to be less touristy than downtown (and half the price), you’ll feel more like a local. But don’t worry, the public transportation around here is outstanding so you won’t have any issues getting around.

Average lodging price in Lincoln Park for 4: $179/Night

South Loop

Located (you guessed it) south of the Loop district, this easily accessible area offers a dynamic mix of cultural landmarks and scenic parklands. Over the decades, this area has taken on several transformations which attracts a diverse crowd. This quaint neighborhood boasts exciting restaurants and a rich history where you can walk to some of Chicago’s most sought after attractions including Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium.

Several communities make up this eclectic district. Printer’s Row is the north section of the South Loop where old publishing buildings have been renovated into trendy living spaces housing students, singles and families. The famous Henry Ford deemed Motor Row an ideal stretch of land to house the largest concentration of auto dealerships in the US but has since been revamped into an expanding art and music scene. From breweries to blues, South Loop offers a nightlife scene that appeals to everyone.
